About the Flutes

​Flute - Specifications

The following are the specifications for all the the flutes made by Troy
  • Flute - Bamboo (Species - Aurea)

  • Cured in the hot Qld Sun - 1-2 months

  • Burned under flame to remove the oils

  • Inside the flute - painted with Food-Grade Polyurethane (traditionally used on bench-tops) to reduce the chance of mould growth.

  • Outside of the flute - Tung oil and Citronella has been rubbed into the flute to protect it

  • Bindings - Nylon

  • Tuning - Done at 22 degrees C

  • Holes are burned with a hot metal rod

  • The flute is bound with Instrument grade Nylon twine, 

  • Finally, the details of the flute are burnt into the flute body, including key, hertz reference, date of tuning. Some flutes are lucky enough to get some decorative patterns burnt in.

Quena - Shakuhachi "Hybrid"  Flute

  • Big, Hearty South American Tone,

  • Play from the Heart with NO MISTAKES! (Pentatonic 5-Note Scale means no discordant note intervals)

  • Easier to get and maintain a solid sound that on a Shakuhachi (Good training wheels for moving into Shakuhachi)

  • Extra Note option to keep it interesting.  Leave your top middle finger on, or take it off periodically to bring in an extra note)

  • Pentatonic 5 Note Scale (Same as the native American Flute Scale and one Branch of the Shakuhachi style flute.

  • Advantage over Native American Flute is you get 2 full octaves

Shakuhachi Style  Flute

  • Traditional Japanese Shakuhachi Tone and mouthpiece,

  • Play from the Heart with NO MISTAKES! (Pentatonic 5-Note Scale means no discordant note intervals)

  • Getting and holding a note is more challenging than the quena-style flutes, as the margin for error is much greater. That being said, once you find it, you practice repeating it and it becomes normalised.

  • Extra Note option to keep it interesting.  Leave your top middle finger on, or take it off periodically to bring in an extra note.  (Some flutes retain the traditional 4 hole shakuhachi design)

  • Pentatonic 5 Note Scale.

  • Advantage over Native American Flute is you get 2 full octaves
